Solidarity Support NEEDED in the boycott of Carnival Cruise Lines! Together, Fairness Works!!!
As part of a global campaign against Crown Holdings, the USW is calling for an expansion of the boycott of Carnival Cruise lines.
On September 6, 2013, Crown Holdings, Inc. provoked a strike by 120 members of USW Local 9176 in Toronto by demanding a permanent two-tier wage plan where the starting rate for new hires would be returned to what it was 28 years ago. The strikers have shown tremendous solidarity and resilience during more than nine months on the picket line. They made it through one of the toughest winters on record. But there is still no end in sight to the strike and they need your help.
Why is there a boycott of Carnival Cruises?
Carnival’s CEO, Mr. Arnold Donald, is a key director of U.S.-based can-making giant Crown Holdings, Inc.
Crown is demanding major concessions at its Toronto plant including the two-tier wage plan, the elimination of the cost of living allowance and new language that would reduce union protections. We believe that Crown wants to undermine and destroy the union over time.
The company’s last offer in March 2014 included a back-to-work protocol that provided few if any assurances that USW members would be recalled to their jobs. Even after 6 months on the picket line, the vote against the proposal was 117 to 1. Rather than making a reasonable offer to end the dispute, Crown made it impossible for USW members to vote for it.
Arnold Donald is a very long-standing director of Crown and sits on the Compensation Committee. As a member of the Compensation Committee, he approved paying Crown’s CEO a compensation package equivalent to $7,000 per hour with lucrative executive retirement benefits, while remaining silent as the company slashed wages and benefits for workers throughout North America.
Mr. Donald’s silence and inaction at Crown is particularly objectionable since his own company, Carnival, relies on workers having decent wages and benefits in order to afford cruises. In other words, the conditions largely set by unions in Canada including vacation pay and decent retirements allow working people to take Mr. Donald’s cruises.
Also, we have been informed by the International Transport Federation (ITF) that Carnival has strongly resisted unionization and is the only major cruise line whose seafarers remain unorganized. The ITF describes Carnival as the “Walmart of the Cruise Industry” because as the largest cruise line in the world it is holding down wages and benefits for all workers, even union workers, aboard cruise ships.
The boycott will put pressure on Carnival at a busy time of year for travelling and is one part of the broader campaign to get Crown to offer USW members a fair contract.
This past April, over 50 USW members and supporters protested in New York City outside the annual meeting of Carnival shareholders while a smaller group entered the meeting to address Arnold Donald directly. Although Arnold Donald met with representatives of the USW and striking members, he has yet to take action to resolve the labour dispute and the boycott continues.
We hope we can count on you to support the boycott of Carnival Cruises. Your union will be joining the Ontario Federation of Labour, the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada and the Toronto and York Region Labour Council in boycotting Carnival Cruises.

On behalf of the members of USW Local 9176, thank you for your assistance in this difficult fight.

During the debate over the fee increase it was mentioned by College staff that only 300 members wrote to complain about the last fee increase. It was suggested that the rest of the members either supported the increase or didn’t care. Send a message that you do care! Tell the College that enough is enough and it is time for them to live within their means. Here is a campaign tool for emailing the College on the ETFO website: http://www.etfo.ca/advocacyandaction/octfeeincrease/pages/default.aspx
