Hello SCEOT Member!                         September 23, 2022
I hope you have enjoyed the first few weeks back!!
I am writing to you today with mixed emotions as I inform you that I will be taking a leave of absence from my Presidents’ role, to pursue an opportunity that I simply could not turn down.
Monique Weiss, our Vice President, will be assuming the role as President Designate, in my absence. I know you will join me in welcoming her to this role of representing all of you!
It has been an honour and privilege to represent all Simcoe County Elementary Occasional Teachers for the last 10 years. I wish you all the best this school year and in all that you endeavour to do!
Yours in Solidarity,
Amy Chevis

Dear SCEOT Member,                                                                       September 13, 2022

ETFO members (teachers, occasional teachers, DECEs, ESPs and PSPs) may be eligible for financial compensation if they were an ETFO member during either or both the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years. Each member’s entitlement is based on the amount of time worked on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis between September 1, 2012, and August 31, 2014. Entitlements for members who worked part-time are pro-rated based on FTE. Payment calculation details can be found in ETFO’s Bill 115 Remedy FAQ.

ETFO members and former members who are eligible to receive a Bill 115 remedy payment should have received correspondence from ETFO Provincial by email or mail.

If you believe you are eligible, but have NOT received correspondence from ETFO, complete ETFO’s online Bill 115 Notice of Objection Form no later than 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2022. If you received correspondence and you believe the remedy calculation is inaccurate, complete the Bill 115 Notice of Objection Form no later than 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2022. The form is available at etfo.ca/Objection115To ensure your objection is processed efficiently, please complete all the fieldsObjections received after September 30 will not be eligible for consideration.

If you have questions about eligibility or the compensation process, please review ETFO’s Bill 115 Remedy FAQ. You may also contact ETFO’s duty officer at 416-962-3836 (1-888-838-3836).

Bill 115 inquiries are being managed through ETFO’s provincial office. Please do not contact the local union office or the school board. School boards will be responsible for issuing remedy payments to eligible members when the objection process is completed. School boards are expected to pay out funds to eligible members.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding as the Federation undertakes this comprehensive process.

Hello SCEOT Member!                     Thursday, February 24, 2022
Last night, the board ratified, meaning SCEOT has a new collective agreement!
I have attached the new language, as a highlights page, to this email. The full and complete collective agreement will be shared in the near future.
As there are some pretty big changes with this collective agreement, it will take some time to operationalize everything. More information will be shared soon as to how things will roll out in regards to experience.
The retro pay and 1% increases for 2019, 2020 and 2021 will be paid no later than 30 days after ratification, as per the central agreement.
There are two Letters of Understanding (Lou’s). One is in regards to the job board, which, on a trial basis, we will be opening up in the evenings for assignments for the following day.
We are also trialing a new half day assignment practice, that will give members more flexibility in accepting two half day assignments. These LOU’s are in effect until June 2022 and will be re-evaluated by SCEOT and the board at that time.
Also, as a reminder, we are currently looking for our next collective bargaining team for the 2022 round! If you are interested, please email me at sceotnews@gmail.com
As always, please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

SCEOT Local Agreement Ratified

January 28, 2022

Our next steps, after the boards meeting, will include meeting with the Board to harmonize the central and local agreements into a single Collective Agreement, which will then be shared with all members.

Thank you again for your continued support and solidarity, after a long round of bargaining!

Happy Friday! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Yours in Education,

Amy Chevis

Also, a reminder to all members to submit their most current QECO rating to the board as soon as possible so that you are paid at your proper grid rate when you start in an LTO position.

Also, there are a number of collective agreement articles you need to be aware of.  A reminder that you are responsible for knowing your Collective Agreement.

4.02 “Long-Term Occasional Teacher” means an Occasional Teacher who is employed for a period of ten (10) or more consecutive teaching days as the replacement for the same teacher. If a PL day falls within that 10 day period it shall not interrupt the ten (10) days.

11.10 (a) Occasional Teachers shall provide 24 hours notice when cancelling an assignment in order to accept another assignment on that day from the board.

(b) If an assignment is cancelled in ATE Easy Connect at least 75 minutes prior to the start of the assignment the Occasional Teacher will not be paid for the assignment. If it is cancelled in ATE Easy Connect less than 75 minutes prior to the start of the assignment it is expected the Occasional Teacher will be paid for the assignment and shall be assigned appropriate professional duties.

16.04. (a) The parties agree that the board will allow Occasional Teachers to request an unpaid leave of absence for up to one school year. Such requests shall be granted. (b) The parties agree the teacher on an approved leave will be replaced on the Roster and it will not be considered a violation of article 11.01 (a). (c) The parties agree that if the addition of these members pierces the cap the list will be brought back to the cap through natural attrition. (d) The Occasional Teacher’s request for an unpaid leave of absence will be submitted to the board no later than June 15th for leaves starting in September and no later than December 15th for leaves starting in January. Requests to begin a leave at other times may be considered and shall not be unreasonably denied.

19.01 (a) An Occasional Teacher employed to replace a permanent, probationary or temporary teacher shall be assigned the timetable of the teacher being replaced, including scheduled and emergency supervision duties. If hired in on a vacancy, timetable is created by the principal.

(b) A casual Occasional Teacher will be released from the assigned class during the preparation time portion scheduled for the teacher being replaced. That preparation time is to be covered by the teacher regularly scheduled to provide the preparation time for the absent teacher.

** THIS MEANS YOUR PLANNING TIME IS YOURS AS PER THE TEACHER YOU ARE REPLACING.

(c) If there is more than 50 minutes of preparation time in that day they may be reassigned within the same subject area/division or assigned appropriate professional duties at the discretion of the principal.

The casual Occasional Teacher shall use the preparation time of the absent teacher to prepare for the assigned class.

19.03 The board shall not require any Occasional Teacher to administer or perform any medical or physical procedure on any pupil that might in any way endanger the safety or well-being of the pupil or subject the Occasional Teacher to risk of injury, disease or negligence. It shall not be part of the duties and responsibilities of an Occasional Teacher to examine pupils for communicable conditions or diseases or to diagnose such conditions or diseases.

19.04 (a) Long Term Occasional Teachers shall be given notice during the first week of their LTO of any deadlines associated with the preparation of report cards.

(b) A Long Term Occasional Teacher who has been assigned for less than 20 teaching days shall be provided assistance to complete report cards during the instructional day, and not during scheduled planning time.

19.06 (a) The Board shall provide Occasional Teachers with access to a copy of the safety plans for students who will be in the homeroom of the assignment they have accepted.

(b) In addition, for itinerant teaching assignments, all applicable safety plans will be made available and organized according to homerooms.

(c) Furthermore, the Occasional Teacher will have access to all safety plans in the building, to be consulted at their discretion and shall be organized by homeroom and division. A copy of the yard duty schedule shall also be available in the safety plan files.

19.07 Principals and part-time Long Term Occasional Teachers shall mutually agree on a schedule for their attendance on PA days within 4 weeks of commencing the LTO.

** If you are in a partial LTO, please discuss PA days and when you will be attending with your admin. There is a calculation that admin have that determines how many PA days you must attend and as per the CA.

Thank you for your time in reading this email and we look forward to an amazing 2019-2020 school year!

There are two new Board memo’s out that may be of interest to you. I have attached them here, and they are also available on the SCDSB staff website. Remember, it is your responsibility to be aware of the memo’s sent out by your employer (SCDSB).

SCETF/SCEOT and the SCDECEs are partnering for the Women In Action Conference again this year. Please see the WOMEN IN ACTION 2019 poster for more information.

A reminder to check your pay stubs and the validation of your assignments in ATE (information was sent last month and can be found at sceot.org and scdsb.on.castaff website under ATE Easy Connect).

Lastly, a reminder that requested jobs entered after 7am on the day of the absence (assignment), will go directly to the job board and may not call the requested person first.

Hello SCEOT Member,

  1. The following message was sent to members who receive ETFO emails, if you don’t currently receive these emails, go to etfo.ca and register today!
Dear Members,

The government consultations on Ontario’s education system are now underway and very shortly, the online survey and telephone town halls will be rolled out. These consultations will have a significant impact not only on our students and our classrooms but also on you as an educator.

Your voice as an educator in this province is vital to this consultation process. Please ensure that you participate.

The consultations so far have ignored the very real need for adequate funding and school repairs, among other key issues. For this reason, they are an important opportunity for you as an educator, a voter, a resident and even as a parent in Ontario to put forward thoughts on how to make further improvements. Keep in mind, however, that Ontario’s public education system is known internationally for working exceptionally well and that the government has a political agenda with this process.

ETFO has prepared some information about each of the areas the government is consulting on, which is posted at BuildingBetterSchools.ca/consultation.

Right now, the consultations are open for written submissions and the government has created a webpage with information for the public. This page tells you what areas have been opened for consultation. ETFO will keep you updated on the consultation and online submissions, along with upcoming town halls throughBuildingBetterSchools.ca/consultation.

This is a public consultation and your voice matters. Your participation is key to representing the views of educators, but it is equally important to encourage friends, family members and parents who can also make a difference. Please share these resources and information with others.

Let’s make sure the government hears from those who are dedicated to maintaining and growing Ontario’s public education system.

Make a submission and Share it with Us

Email your recommendations to: fortheparents@ontario.ca, please include [consultations@etfo.org] in the cc field to keep us informed of your views. Alternatively, you can fill out an online form atwww.ontario.ca/page/for-the-parents.

Keep an eye on your email and buildingbetterschools.ca/consultationin the coming weeks. We will continue to share developments and further opportunities to make your voice heard.

Sincerely, Sam Hammond

RECONCILIATION THROUGH
INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

October 23 – December 4

A free Massive Open Online Course

http://pdce.educ.ubc.ca/Reconciliation

The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia will once again offer the Massive Open Online Course: Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education starting October 23rd.

This free six week course supports professional and personal learning for advancing Indigenous priorities and reconciliation in community, education, and work contexts. It runs asynchronously, which means you view materials and engage in the course at your own pace.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will help you envision how Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, and approaches to learning can be made part of the work we do in classrooms, organizations, communities, and our everyday experiences in ways that are thoughtful and respectful. In this course, reconciliation emphasizes changing institutional structures, practices, and policies, as well as personal and professional ideologies to create environments that are committed to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous peoples.

For educators, this means responding to educational reforms that prioritize improved educational outcomes for Indigenous learners. In addition, educators must support all learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people’s worldviews and cultures as a basis for creating equitable and inclusive learning spaces. To support these goals, teachers, administrators, young people, school staff, and researchers will learn from Indigenous Elders, educational leaders, and culturally relevant learning resources as part of their experiences in this Massive Open Online Course.

For others who want to build their own competence and the capacity of those around them to engage in relationships with Indigenous peoples based on intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect, this course will help get you started in this process.

CATEGORY CHANGES

For teachers that qualify for or will qualify for a change in category based on additional qualifications or an updated QECO Rating Statement, please ensure the following guidelines are met:

    1. Go online to the staff website, under “Human Resources” and complete the online Intent to Change Salary Category form, indicating the date that the course was completed (or will be completed). This must be submitted by November 30, 2018.
  1. Submit an updated copy of QECO Rating Statement. It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that this form is submitted to Human Resources by June 30, 2019.

The effective date of the category change will depend upon completion and submission dates of the final course work required for the salary upgrade. (HR may request confirmation as to when the final course work was submitted and received by the course instructor in order to determine the correct effective date for the salary change).

  • Final course work completed by August 31, 2018 – Salary change effective September 1, 2018 (pending “Intent to Change Salary Category” form is on file in HR by Nov. 30/18 and an updated QECO rating statement is rec’d in HR by June 30/19).  If the “Intent to Change Salary Category” form is submitted after November 30th but before June 30/19, then the adjustment will be made effective January 1st of that school year.
  • Final course work completed by December 31, 2018 – Salary change effective January 1, 2019 (pending “Intent to Change Salary Category” form is on file and an updated QECO rating statement is rec’d in HR by June 30/19).
  • Any course work completed after December 31, 2018 – Salary change effective September 1, 2019 (pending “intent to Change Salary Category” form is on file by Nov. 30/19 and an updated QECO statement is rec’d in HR by June 30/20).

Once received, updated QECO Rating Statements can be emailed to the appropriate contact in Human Resources:

Hello SCEOT Member,                                October 2, 2018

Please see the PL Newsletter October 2018 .

Also, please read the email below from your Health and Safety  Chair.

Hello,

My name is Miriam Schembri and I am your new Health & Safety Officer.

I have some pretty big shoes to fill, taking over from Mike Shillolo, but I’m looking forward to learning about my role as your H&S rep and understanding the many aspects of this important area, in which we, as teachers, need to be kept informed.

Your questions will help me to learn.  And since learning is our thing, please ask!

Here are some exemplars:

    1. Hey Miriam, why is it so difficult to find the link to AIRs (aggressive incident reporting forms) on the Board website?                                                                                                                                      Excellent question!  You’ll be happy to know that the Aggressive Incident Report link can now be found on the Board Home page after you sign into the staff site.  It’s under “USEFUL LINKS.”  No more having to click on five (5!) different links to finally get to it.
  1. Yo, Miriam, I feel a little overwhelmed when I’m asked to review a school’s safety plans. What is my responsibility with regard to them?                                                                                                  Another excellent question that speaks to what many of our members are curious about.  You are responsible to read the plans for the students that will be in the class/es in which you will be assigned that day. You are NOT required to review all the safety plans in the office binder.

I will be posting more information about safety plans in the near future.  There are some grey areas that I feel are still unclear with regard to them.

The Board is in the process of creating new safety plan binders for all the schools.  I will be requesting that they be arranged by teacher name alphabetically, and that copies of the safety plans accompany the teacher’s dayplan so that you can have access to them throughout the day (in case you must refer to them).

We teachers are creative and resourceful, so I’d love your help!  If you would like to offer a suggestion or have a comment/question about safety plans (or other health and safety issues) please email me, healthandsafety@sceot.org

Together we can create a work environment in which we all feel safer and more secure.  I look forward to hearing from you and informing you about all matters of H&S that concern us as OTs

Yours in solidarity,

Miriam Schembri

HELLO SCEOT Member!                            Sept. 6, 2018

Also, a reminder to all members to submit their most current QECO rating to the board as soon as possible so that you are paid at your proper grid rate when you start in an LTO position.

Calendars were mailed out this week and also contain important information for you! Including information on the one paid day for PD for occasional teachers. More information will come attached with the September ON CALL as well as from a Board Memo that will be released soon.
